Spain's shift on Western Sahara sparks controversy

European Commission welcomes move, while Morocco hails diplomatic victory

Spain's decision to officially endorse Morocco's position on the Western Sahara conflict has drawn mixed reactions, with the European Commission welcoming the move while Morocco hails it as a diplomatic victory.

Most of Western Sahara has been under Moroccan control since Spain, the territory's former colonial administrator, withdrew in 1975. The move comes after a deep diplomatic crisis between Spain and Morocco, which was resolved when the two countries reaffirmed their reconciliation in Rabat on February 2.

Spain's shift is another significant diplomatic victory for Morocco, following the recognition of the country's sovereignty over Western Sahara by the Trump administration in the United States.
